Upgrading Cat Bi is considered an important project as it plays a pivotal role not only in the functioning of the Vietnamese airport system but the socio-economic development strategy of the north in general and the northern coastal city of Haiphong in particular.
The investment looks to meet the rising demand for air transport for a long time to come. In 2014, Cat Bi served 930,000 passengers, a 6 per cent on-year increase, via a total of 6,738 flights. The total load of goods transport reached 5,626 tonnes.
Cat Bi is currently being upgraded. The expansion started on March 19, 2013 with the total capital of VND3.660 trillion ($171.4 million) and would be carried out during the 2013-2015 period.
Accordingly, a new 3,050-metre long and 60m wide concrete runway would be built parallel to the existing runway, allowing Cat Bi to accommodate larger aircrafts such as the B747, B777-300, B777-200 and A321.
